The Christian Woman and MakeUp

Author: Krystal Husain

“N
ow when Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it, and she painted her eyes and beautified her head and looked out of [an upper] window.” 2Kings 9:30 (Amplified Bible)

Much controversy surrounds this verse. Many think the verse to mean that Jezebel put on makeup, and if she is a wicked woman, then the application of makeup must be evil as well. But if this is true, then within the same verse we see that Jezebel also combed her hair, she “beautified her head”. Then is it wrong also for women to style their hair? If that were true then no woman should colour, braid or style her hair.

The application of makeup is not an act of vanity, though it can be if we are not careful. How do we not get carried away with makeup? By first knowing this simple fact: God has made each one of us beautiful, and it is not the makeup that makes us beautiful. Makeup simply enhances that which is already there. Each woman must know and accept this fact for herself. Need further convincing? Read the following verses.

“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.” Gen 1:27.

And if we are made in the image and likeness of God, then are we beautiful, because He is beautiful (Note the proof below):

Psalm 27:4 “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord…”.

Also Psalm 139:14 says “I will praise Thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;…”.

The glory of God is the beauty of every Christian woman!

As hinted to earlier, the purpose of makeup is to enhance the beauty of the face by highlighting the good features and hiding the not so great ones. Makeup can, however, be applied incorrectly, causing some undesirable effects. The goal in makeup application is simple: To bring out a woman’s outstanding features, and diminish her not so glorious ones, and not the other way around! It also should NOT become the object of our all of our attention, because then it becomes an idol!! I know that some of us are Make up Artists and so on, but that still does not mean that make up ought to become an obsession. As Christian women, our obsession should be the heart of Our Saviour. As long as we have that understanding we're good to go...

So stick around if you're interested in learning neat little techniques that will improve your makeup application. There's more to come...stay tuned.

In the mean time, I leave you with this Youtube video: Beautiful by Bethany Dillon. Hope it blesses your heart. Know that you are beautiful in His eyes.

God bless you!!
