ANALOGY: A child walks over to the refrigerator and pulls out a mug of juice. Determined to get as much juice as he possibly could, he fills his glass to the brim. He then attempts to add ice to his drink. What do you think is going to happen? Of course, the juice will overflow.
POINT: If I were to ask
any believer out there if they wanted "more of God", the
general consensus is going to be a resounding "YES!!". Who
doesn't want more of God these days?! But what does this statement really
mean? Is it possible to actually get more of God? And if yes, then how do
I get more of God?
Don Moen sang a song:
“More of You and less of me, Lord I pray that there might be more of You and
less of me”; and in John 3:30, John the Baptist says: "He must
increase, but I must decrease". I believe that these two guys hit the nail
on the head! To simply say that we want more of God, in my mind is an incomplete statement, for in my
opinion; God has already given all of Himself to us. He gave His ONLY begotten
Son as a sacrifice on the cross in an attempt to reconcile us back to Himself,
then He gave His Holy Spirit Who He said will “teach you all things and
will remind you of everything I [Jesus] have said to you.” (John 14:26). Then why
does it seem that we need “more of God”?
I’ll like to draw your
attention back to the analogy above. The reason the juice will overflow is because
two types of matter cannot exist in the same space. In order for the ice to fit
into the glass, some juice must be removed. Now think of yourself as the glass
of juice. Before you received Christ, you were simply filled with yourself and
whatever other feelings, vices…sin! When you got saved and received Christ you
realised that certain things needed to be removed from your life…maybe at this
time it would have been the obvious, more visible sins like pornography, drug
and alcohol abuse and so on. As such, you would give up some part of yourself
to God and receive Him into yourself. This is the ice dropping into the glass
and some of the juice spilling out. As we are so “full of ourselves”, there’s
no more room for God until we start emptying
ourselves, thus the feeling that we need more of God, and essentially, we
do…but the only way that we are ever going to achieve this is by decreasing ourselves! IN ORDER FOR GOD TO INCREASE IN OUR LIVES,
WE MUST DECREASE! There simply is no other way as the two cannot completely
fill the same space!
So then, how does one decrease
allowing God to increase? 2 Cor. 5:15 says: “and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer
for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” If we want
more of God in us, we must first be
willing to decrease, realising that we are no longer living for ourselves, but for God. I believe this is the
deterrent for many Christians today. Society has taught us to seek after self…but
God wants us to seek after Him. Many of us will not be willing to give up our desires for Him. Many will “put their
hands to the plough and look back” (Luke 9:62), many will walk away from Sodom and
Gomorrah but will look back, because their hearts will desire the things of
that land; but the fate of those that look back will be as that of Lot’s wife (Genesis19:26).
You know, one of my
favourite songs of all time is “Fill Me Up” by Jesus Culture. I want to be
filled completely with His Spirit; but unless I empty myself and allow Him to have His way in me, I will
not have more of Him in me, I won’t be filled! And it’s easier than you think
to be filled. Joyce Meyer always says that “You are as close to God as you want to be”. If you want to be filled
with God, it will happen for you if you truly aim for that. Ask God to reveal
those things that hinder His presence in your life, worship Him as if your life
depended on it, and seek His face daily. Make a conscious effort to get into
His presence…worship, pray and praise on
purpose! And before you know it, the carnal man will decrease, and God will
increase in you. I encourage all of us to submit to the Spirit of God today. Be
blessed!
This is really great, I commend and admire you for doing this! Please keep this up, will be looking out for more :)
